    Starting from Kyoto (or Tokyo), your action-packed three day walking journey covers the best sections of the ancient Nakasendo Trail, passing the picturesque Kiso Valley known for its rural villages and natural scenery, and visiting the exquisitely-preserved post towns of Magome, Tsumago and Narai. Stretching all the way from Tokyo to Kyoto, the 533km Nakasendo trail is jam-packed with Japanese traditional culture, architecture, shops and ambiance. Walking the Nakasendo Trail from village to village is a great way to sample Japan's rural scenery.

    Mixed with paved village paths and unpaved forested/mountain trails, the Nakasendo Trail is an easy to moderate walk with some gentle ascents and descents.

    The package also includes entry tickets to three beautiful sights in Kiso-Fukushima, including:

    -Yamamura Residence, former home of the Owari clan's leader Yamamura and overseer of the Kiso-Fukushima area

    - Ko zenji Temple, home to Asia’s largest dry rock garden

    - Fukushima Sekisho-Ato, a 270 year-old immigration office.

    Walk the original Nakasendo route by day, and stay at handpicked Japanese inn/ryokan by night including one night at Tobira Onsen Myojinkan, a member of Relais & Châteaux, offering superb rooms and suites, sophisticated Kaiseki-style food as well as organic French cuisine. All rooms have an ensuite.

    After the walk, led by a guide, you'll visit the world-famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and observe the hot spring-bathing monkeys at close proximity. Explore Zenko-ji, one of Japan’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples and experience Nagano's renowned food culture and ‘sake' with a tasting.     Luggage Forwarding

    Baggage handling is not included in the tour cost, but Japan has a fabulous luggage forwarding service which you can use to send your luggage to your next destination. It will take between 24 and 72 hours to get the luggage to the next point so we recommend preparing an overnight bag when using this service. Luggage can be sent between any two points in Japan and the bell desks or receptions at your hotel will be happy to assist you with arranging this luggage transfer. We can assist you to arrange luggage transfers. The 3 day luggage transfer cost is approx. 4500 - 9000 yen (AUD 60 - 115) depending on the size and the weight of the luggage.

    Pack Free Walk

    Hike Nakahechi including the hardest Ogumotori-goe pass of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route from mountain to sea. Traverse village to village, and visit iconic grand shrines and waterfalls. Complete the adventurous trekking with the grand finale being the world-famous Kumano Nachi Taisha and Nachi Falls. This is the most memorable challenge of the Kodo.

    Stay four nights with Japanese inns/ryokans with private toilets. Enjoy home-cooked and Kaiseki set dinners featuring local seasonal ingredients. Your luggage will be transported each day to the next inn so that you can enjoy exploring the world-famous Kumano Kodo, Japan's ancient pilgrimage route on foot independently over 5 days.

    The Kumano Kodo is the world's only UNESCO World Heritage-listed pilgrimage route besides the Camino de Santiago. Once a sacred pilgrimage reserved for emperors and samurai for over 1200 years, the world-class Kumano Kodo hiking route is today open to all walkers and natural wanderers.

    The Kumano Kodo hiking route is well marked with sign posts. It weaves through the mountainous Kii Peninsula, forested landscapes and occasional villages. This moderate to hard walk has a mix of village paved paths and unpaved forest trails. The Ogumotori-goe is a challenging walk with long ascents and descents, but regarded as the most memorable challenge of the Kodo. You'll walk from village to village covering up to 52.5 km over 3.5 days' walking and have opportunity to visit two Grand Shrines (Kumano Hongu Taisha & Kumano Nachi Taisha).

    Most meals are included for the duration of the walk. You will enjoy authentic and delicious local cuisine.

    Your luggage will be transported each day to the next inn so you only need to carry a daypack to enjoy your daily exploration.

    This is a highly rewarding Kumano Kodo trek for natural wonders and adventure seekers.

    Add A Guide

    You can choose to have a local guide for your first day. The local guide will explain this significant historical area as well as provide detailed information on the trail and general track advice. You are then well equipped to continue on your way for the remainder of your self-guided walk. Additional cost: $250 per person.

    Orientation

    The local staff will give you an orientation of the tour when you arrive at Kii-Tanabe station. The staff will supply you with maps, bus timetables and brief you on your itinerary. The staff will explain cultural elements such as how to use a bath and purchase bus tickets if need be as well as answer any last minute questions.

    Dual Pilgrim

    This walk is qualified for "Dual Pilgrim". We provide official Dual Pilgrim Credential - a type of passport for pilgrims. It is used to collect stamps along the trail as a record of the walk. There are two sides, one for the Kumano Kodo and one for the Way of St. James.Please read the details in the section of Dual Pilgrim at the bottom of this page.
