Travel by private car towards the rural Mie Prefecture, famous for its forested landscapes and Mediterranean looking coastlines. The area is famous for producing some of the freshest seafood in Japan and in its waters pearl cultivation has become an important activity.
Arrive at the famous Ise Grand Shrine, this shrine is considered one of the most sacred areas for the Shinto religion and is one of the favorite pilgrimage destinations for Japanese people. Among the thousands of Shinto shrines in Japan, Jingu is treated as one of the most sacred. Just a short walk away, the picturesque district of Okage-Yokocho offers a great outlook on the traditional side of the area with its quaint shops selling local arts and crafts as well as food. After lunch, have tea or a dessert at one of the local food stalls or Japanese-style cafés in Okage-Yokocho before continuing to the nearby Meoto-Iwa, which literally means “the married couple rocks.” These two stones are joined by an impressive Shinto shimenawa, a rope made of rice straw, and represent the union in marriage of man and woman.

You start the day with Ise Jingu Grand Shrine. The sprawling woodlands of Ise Jingu Grand Shrine - Japane's holiest site - are said to cover an area about the size of Paris. This expanse of land is replete with dense, ancient forest and some of the most spectacular scenery in the nation. The air of spirituality is palpable - and best experienced on foot, just like the pilgrims who have been making their way here for thousands of years.
This journey comprises a short hike that takes in some of the Ise Jingu's most beautiful and profound locations, including the 3.9 km trail to the summit of Mt Asama - offering a 555 meter high panorama of the rugged Ise Bay (and even the distant Mt. Fuji on clearer days) that has been designated as one of the 100 landscapes of Japan since 1927.
The hike also takes in Kongoshoji, a vivid-red Zen temple that is part of the traditional pilgrimage route to Ise Jingu, nestled high up on Mt Asama Kongoshoji is said to have been built in 827 by Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Before return to AMANEMU, a hearty bento box lunch and soup are to be enjoyed at the summit of Mt Asama.
After the hike, you will experience the dramatic, vibrant sunset from Ago Bay. A boat will take you out past the rugged coastline as the sun skins down below the islets of the Shima Peninsula.
Return to your accommodation after the cruise.
Walking distance: approx. 6.2 km return walk
After breakfast, hike into the forest and reach the Yokoyama Observatory. Ise-Shima is renowned for its relationship with the sea. The rivers tumbling down from mountains snaking through the landscape, providing irrigation for the rice fields and forests that cover the landscape, creating a symbiotic relationship between the people, land, and sea. A great place to take in this striking scenery is the Yokoyama Observatory, which overlooks Ago Bay.
After the hike, enjoy grilled seafood lunch in an Ama Hut.

The Kumano Kodo can be walked year round but the weather can change rapidly in the Kumano mountain environment. The best time to walk the Kumano Kodo really depends on what you are looking for.March - April is spring season and an extremely popular time as it is cherry blossom season in Japan. October - November is also a popular time to visit as it is autumn and the colours throughout the forest are stunning. In spring and autumn, you can expect daytime temperatures of around 10-15°C. May and September are also lovely months to visit with warmer and longer days - daytime temperatures range between 18-24°C.June - August is summer season so you can expect much more humidity and higher rainfall but on the other hand scenery is beautifully green and verdant. During summer you can expect up to 25-30°C in temperature.December - February is winter season and there is a small chance of snow on the Nakahechi route. Trails are open year round but due to the cool weather and reduced hours of daylight we recommend this time of year for experienced trekkers only. Most accommodation close during the Christmas and New Year's holiday period.Kii-Peninsula is one of the wettest areas of mainland Japan and you should be prepared with adequate rain gear. Please note that the period when you are most likely to experience Typhoons is during August - early October period. If a Typhoon makes landfall on the mainland then there is often disruption to travel plans as all transport shuts down during a Typhoon and people stay indoors. Depending on the damage caused there may also be temporary trail closures - though usually things return to normal fairly quickly.

We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
