Established over 1,200 years ago, this trail features 88 ‘official’ temples and numerous other sites which covers thousands of kilometres around the island of Shikoku and allows walkers to experience the abundance of nature and quaint local culture on their walking journey. Many people come to walk the trail to atone for sins, pray for good health or in memory of someone lost among the mixed town roads and forest trails. Not only does Shikoku harbour the iconic pilgrimage route, it is also a mountainous region with great hiking options including two of the ‘100 Famous Mountains’, Ishizuchi-san and Tsurugi-san.
