From Karratha, it’s a short drive to the Burrup Peninsula, one of the richest sites in the world for prehistoric rock engravings. This outdoor art gallery is decorated with more than 20,000 Aboriginal engravings dating back over 40,000 years, making it one of the best places in Australia to see ancient Indigenous art. The carvings include depictions of human-like figures, human faces and animals that no longer inhabit the region including the Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger.
After viewing the engravings, you’ll explore the coast and visit the North West Shelter Visitor Centre to find out more about one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. Spend time wandering around the centre, viewing the displays and watching a short, award-winning movie that conveys the story of the gas project and its development.
You’ll stay the night at Best Western Plus The Ranges Karratha in a luxury serviced apartment with a resort-style swimming pool.
Journey off the beaten track to the magnificent Millstream-Chichester National Park. Sprawling over 200,000 hectares around the Fortescue River – the heartland of the Yindjibarndi people – this lush oasis of deep gorges and palm fringed rock pools provides a start contrast to the surrounding landscape of rocky escarpments and rolling spinifex covered hills.
After a picnic lunch, continue onto the Rio Tinto Access Roads, privately-owned roads running parallel to the train network throughout the Pilbara, providing maintenance to the railway. Here, you may pass some of the world’s longest trains, carrying the riches of iron ore, destined for export.
In the late afternoon, stop in at Hamersley Gorge, a dramatic gorge, full of colour, texture and reflections – a great spot for a swim!
You’ll stay the next two nights at Karijini Eco Retreat, located in the heart of Western Australia’s second largest national park, the spectacular Karijini National Park. You will stay in either deluxe eco tents or dorm cabins for that authentic outback experience.
You have a full day to discover the magic of Karijini National Park and journey through over two billion years of the Earth’s history. Descend into cavernous gorges, scale some of the oldest rocks on the planet and paddle into crystal-clear waterways. Choose from an amazing network of walking trails ranging from easy to challenging; and make sure to visit Oxer’s lookout for unforgettable views over the junction of four mighty gorges. Cool off at the end of the day with a swim in the spring-fed pools beneath Fortescue Falls.
Depart Karijini and continue your journey through the remote Pilbara landscape. You’ll stop off at Tom Price, one of Australia’s first company mining towns, for a view of the colossal Mount Tom Price mine. The Hamersley Range, where the mine is located, contains 80 percent of all identified iron ore reserves in Australia and is one of the world’s major iron ore provinces.
In the afternoon, arrive at the pretty coastal village of Coral Bay. Here, on the white sand beaches, you’re but a few steps from the world’s largest fringing reef – the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef.
You’ll stay the night at Ningaloo Reef Resort in a comfortable self-contained studio or one or two-bedroom room overlooking the tropical gardens and pool.
Discover a unique underwater oasis with a glass bottom boat cruise over Ningaloo Reef. During your cruise, expect to see colourful coral, countless fish and, if you’re lucky, perhaps a turtle, manta ray or majestic whale shark. You’ll have the opportunity to swim or snorkel to get even closer to these natural wonders.
Departing Coral Bay, continue along the coastal road via the Carnarvon. This rich agricultural district produces 80 percent of Western Australia’s total fruit and vegetable crops, and much of the state’s seafood with a thriving prawn, scallop, crab and fishing industry.
Continue onto Shark Bay where you’ll stay the next two nights at the famous Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, home to one of the world’s best dolphin encounters.
Get to know Monkey Mia’s most famous residents at one of the resort’s highly acclaimed dolphin experiences. If you’re lucky, you may even get to feed these friendly and intelligent creatures.
After, venture out to Francois Peron National Park, known for its contrasting red cliffs, white beaches and blue waters. From Skipjack Point Lookout, you’ll be able to see an impressive array of marine life, perhaps even a humpback whale!
In the afternoon, choose your preferred activity: learn about the local culture and history with a Wulu Guda Nyinda Indigenous tour; or board the ‘Shotover’ catamaran and enjoy a sunset cruise with a Monkey Mia wildlife specialist.
First stop of the day: Shell Beach. This aptly named beach is made up of billions of tiny shells up to 10 metres deep and stretching for over 70 kilometres. There is no sand, only shells, making this beach a unique photo spot. It’s perfect for swimming – the salty water makes it easy to float!
From here, head over to Hamelin Pool to see the world’s most diverse and abundant examples of living marine stromatolites or ‘living fossils’. A 200-metre boardwalk provides excellent views of these living representatives of life over 3,500 million years ago when there was no complex life on Earth.
Next, head inland to the Murchison River Region, known for its wildflowers in season and its plethora of wildlife: the area is home to nearly 200 species of birds including eagles, black swans and wetland waders. If you’re lucky, you might even spot an emu!
You’ll stay the night at Wooleen Station, a former cattle and sheep station that has been transformed into an environmental showcase by its dedicated young owners.
Journey through the mid-west through one of Western Australia’s best kept secrets: Wildflower Way. From August to September, the landscape bursts into bloom with more than 12,000 species of wildflower, 60% of which are found nowhere else. If you’re visiting from June to October, you’ll see plenty of stunning pink yellow and white everlasting daisies.
Continue on to Kalbarri National Park to see Nature’s Window, one of Western Australia’s most iconic natural attractions. Formed over millions of years from layers of Tumblagooda Sandstone, this natural window overlooks the tranquil Murchison River.
You’ll stay the night at Kalbarri Edge Resort in a self-contained apartment with 4-star resort facilities and a clean, modern style that both refreshes and relaxes.
Today’s stop – Lesueur National Park – Is a mecca for wildlife lovers and botanists the world over. Between June to October, you’ll find over 900 species of wildflower in bloom: an explosion of colour and fragrance that must be seen (and smelt) to be believed. Over 100 species of bird rely on this flora for their survival.
You’ll drive to the top of Mount Lesueur for a spectacular panoramic view across the park and the gorgeous Green Head. Make sure to take your camera to capture the beauty of the region and, if you’re lucky, you may even see the extremely rare Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo!
You’ll stay the night at Pinnacles Edge Resort in a 4.5-star luxury serviced apartment.
Cap off your West Coast Wander with walk through Nambung National Park, home to the iconic Pinnacles. Regarded as one of Australia’s most unique landscapes, these eerie limestone formations rise out of shifting sand dunes to heights of up to five metres. Depending on the time of the day, the Pinnacles create shadows and shapes that ripple over the sands in a strange cosmic dance.
Your journey concludes in the state’s capital: Perth. You’ll be dropped off at accommodation of your choosing, from which you may commence your onward journey.
