Your journey begins with pick up from either Wanaka or Queenstown. Transfer to Whare Kea Lodge, Wanaka, for a 20-minute scenic helicopter flight to the Whare Kea Chalet – your very own luxury mountain retreat for the next 2 nights.
After lunch, head out into nature with your private hiking guide. There are many trails to choose from around the Chalet – your guide will tailor your walk to suit weather conditions and your personal fitness and preferences. Expect unmarked and unformed trails meandering through tussock regions with waterfalls and tarns or hiking up a mountain or ‘scree’ slope. In springtime, breath in the perfumed scent of wildflowers for miles!
In the evening, return to the Chalet for a gourmet 3-course meal.
Embark on an exhilarating full-day hike with your private hiking guide.
Albert Burn Saddle and nearby Dragonfly Peak are absolute must-sees. Views are jaw-dropping in every direction, with Mount Aspiring and the mighty Aoraki/Mount Cook prominent in either direction. From the saddle, there is a 500-metre rise along a broad spur where your guide will lead you through vegetated rock step to the rugged ridgeline just below the summit, a walk suitable for any fitness level. Experienced and keen trampers may choose to scramble the last section to the summit.
In the evening, return to the Chalet for another gourmet 3-course meal.
Cap off your backcountry adventure with one last half-day hike.
Your guide has undoubtedly saved the best until last, so expect breathtaking views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounds all the way to Aoraki/Mount Cook.

While New Zealand has a largely temperate climate, the average temperature decreases as you travel south. Around Queenstown and Wanaka, the average temperature ranges from 22-10 degrees Celsius in summer to 12-3 degrees Celsius in winter. The inland alpine area of the South Island will be even colder. In summer a light jacket or sweater should be included in your luggage. You can expect some rain, so include a light waterproof jacket or coat. Pack warm winter clothing if visiting between May and September. Layer your clothing.

The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.Force Majeure'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.EvacuationsIn rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.Travel InsuranceIn view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
