The Murray River lies within the internationally recognised Riverland Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in South Australia. A combination of guided walking and peaceful cruising immerses you in this unique landscape, exploring the rich river heritage including Aboriginal culture, pastoralism and the intricate network of paddle-steamers, locks and weirs that operate within this fascinating river system. This is a wildlife spotters paradise, the wetlands area is renowned for its water birds, the endangered Southern bell frog and the handsome Regent parrot. Encounters with Red and Grey Kangaroos, emus, black swans and pelicans are a regular occurrence on the Murray River and 179 bird species have been recorded, including the elusive Red-capped Robin and mischievous Fairywrens.
In just 5 days you’ll discover kangaroos and emus and the spectacular forests of a broad river bound by majestic ochre-coloured cliffs. Your journey will include walking with Aboriginal rangers, canoeing tranquil backwaters, and driving on a birdwatching safari through dunes and ephemeral lakes on Calperum Station conservancy area. Self drive to arrive in Paringa (5 minutes from Renmark) and leave your car secure. Your guide will provide a brief introduction to the landscape before you and you board our roomy pontoon cruiser and begin cruising along the Murray River. You discover river country with keen eyes scanning the tree line for koalas and waterbirds.
You’ll be welcomed at the houseboat where lunch has been prepared. Enjoy lunch while admiring the mighty red gums spotting pelicans, swallows, darters from the houseboat.
In the afternoon, enjoy a guided canoe through the quiet creeks where you’ll encounter pelicans, darters, cormorants, and spoonbills before cruising along the river on twilight. Returning back to the houseboat, enjoy a hot spa on the top deck overlooking the river at sunset and listen to the Whistling Kites call. Nocturnal walking and stargazing the night skies await after dinner and your guides will help you find Possums and star constellations in the night sky.
Sit by a riverbank campfire under the sparkling starlit skies where your lodge style houseboat accommodation is moored. You’ll also be treated to superb local food with a creative native twist.
After a nourishing breakfast, enjoy a guided morning cliff walk with possibilities of spotting Wedge-tailed Eagles, honeyeaters, and migratory bee eaters in warmer months. Keen eyes will also be on the lookout for Fairywrens, kangaroos and striped emu chicks in spring.
Returning to the houseboat for lunch, there is time to rest before driving to a great ephemeral lake where spectacular birdwatching can include Black swans and their cygnets, Pied Stilts, Red-necked Avocets, Yellow-billed Spoonbills, migratory waders and rarer Blue-billed ducks and Musk ducks. Harriers and Whistling Kites will be busy in this area and an occasional Wedge-tailed Eagle may visit.
The afternoon is spent on the houseboat admiring the sunset from the top deck spa before your guides prepare a locally-focused three-course meal to complete the day.
The dawn chorus and aromas of great coffee raise you from your sleep. Enjoy breakfast on the houseboat as the sunlight on the cliffs is reflected in the mirror-like surface of the river. After breakfast, you can explore the riverbank and the native plants at your own pace. Gather your thoughts and record your inspirations during a leisurely cruise on the houseboat passed spectacular red-ochre cliffs to our lunch destination on the river.
Relax in your surroundings savouring a lunch prepared by your guides and served on the top deck of the houseboat (if the weather permits). After another short cruise on the houseboat, we arrive at the final destination and say our farewells as you depart to Paringa.
After collecting your car, self drive to The Frames for another night of romantic retreat. In-house massages are available adding to the many tailored options creating a truly memorable experience.

The Murray River Walk starts in Renmark and is an easy 3.5 hour drive from Adelaide Airport or a 1.5 hour drive from Mildura Airport.Major commercial flights provide convenient access to Adelaide and Mildura.Private road & charter flight transfers can be arranged for you. The tour operates between March and November to avoid the hot summer heat of December, January and February.
March, April, October and November are all warm months that will encourage you to take a swim in the river when you are on the houseboat. The average daily maximum temperatures for these months (degrees Celsius) ranges from 26.3C to 30.9C.
Hot days will occur and therefore light clothes, sun hats and sunscreen are important as well as carrying water each day.
May to September are the cooler months where conditions make for comfortable walking. Calm, sunny days are typical during these cooler months, but make sure you pack a windproof jacket for travelling in the open-air pontoon cruiser. Campfires are permitted at this time of year.
The average daily maximum temperatures (degrees Celsius) are as follows: May 20°C, June 17°C, July 17°C, August 18°C, September 21°C.
The creature comforts include 5 bedrooms (each room sleeps 2 people), 2 bathrooms with hot showers, a spacious lounge, a modern kitchen and a top deck area with hot spa and spectacular views.
The houseboat accommodation is exclusively yours and you only need to unpack once as you keep the same room for the entire journey.

The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.Force Majeure'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.EvacuationsIn rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.Travel InsuranceIn view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
