You will be collected from your Darwin accommodation at approximately 7:00am for the 2-hour drive to Litchfield National Park, one of the Northern Territory’s best kept secrets.
Spend the morning exploring waterfalls, spring-fed streams and rugged sandstone escarpments. Discover the intriguing cathedral and magnetic termite mounds before heading to Buley Rockhole for a refreshing swim surrounded by monsoon forest. A short journey later, arrive at Florence Falls, where you will enjoy a hike and another welcome swim.
After a delicious picnic lunch, leave the highway behind and hit the old Jim Jim 4WD dirt track to the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, the largest national park in Australia covering almost 20,000 square kilometres (7722sqmi). Travel past billabongs and traverse water crossings bringing ample opportunity for wildlife spotting before a comfort stop and chance for refreshment.
Early evening, arrive at your private campsite complete with comfortable permanent tents. You will have time to shower and refresh while your guides prepare dinner for the group. Make sure to look up and admire the spectacular night sky.
Embark on an iconic Yellow Water Cruise through the heart of Kakadu. The Indigenous-owned Yellow Water Cruises takes you on a discovery tour through the rich wildlife, dramatic scenery and ever-changing landscape of the world-famous Yellow Water Billabong and the tributaries of the South Alligator River. As you navigate the waters, look out for crocodiles and buffalo on the floodplains. You will also see a plethora of birds – about one third of Australia’s bird species are represented in Kakadu, with at least 60 species found in the wetlands.
Back on dry land, travel to Twin Falls Gorge, which is accessed by 4WD track, a boat shuttle service and a rocky walking track and boardwalk. Once there, relax on the sandy banks and admire the split cascade that plunges from a 150-metre-high (492ft) cliff face into a deep pool. In the dry season, the waterfall slows to a trickle and you can walk right to the base of the imposing escarpment.
Next, make your way to Jim Jim Falls, Kakadu’s biggest waterfall. At 200-metres (656ft), it is also taller than all the waterfalls at Litchfield and Nitmiluk National Parks in the Northern Territory. Marvel at the contrast between the red ochre of the Arnhem Land escarpment and the white sandy beaches. It’s worth the 900-metre (2953ft) walk across the rocks to take a dip in the crystal-clear water of the plunge pool.
At the end of the day, make your way back to camp for a hearty dinner and well-earned rest.
ravel to nearby Nourlangie (Burrungkuy) Rock. Stroll through shaded rock shelters to marvel at some of the world’s oldest and most impressive rock art and discover how life used to be for the Bininj. Then, climb to the Nawurlandja lookout for spectacular views over the Arnhem Land escarpment and Anbangbang Billabong. Looking across the savanna woodlands to the sheer cliffs of the escarpment gives you a sense of the grand scale of Kakadu. Make sure to keep an eye out for the elusive bark – or black wallaroo – which can sometimes be seen foraging for plants in the early morning and late afternoon.
Next, head to the Bowali Visitor Centre. Spend an hour at the interpretative centre where you can watch a 25-minute video presentation to help you gain a greater understanding of Kakadu’s landscape and moods. You may also visit the Marrawuddi Gallery, showcasing Aboriginal art by artists from within Kakadu and the wider region.
Enjoy lunch at the culturally significant Aboriginal art site, Ubirr, located within the East Alligator region of the park. With a local guide, explore several breathtaking Aboriginal art sites – much of the art here features fish, turtles, goanna and other important food animals. At the main gallery, a painting of a Thylacine (the Tasmanian Tiger, which became extinct on the mainland more than 2,000 years ago) is a rare treat, and gives an idea of the age of some of this art. You will also view “contact art” from the time when Indigenous people first encountered Europeans.
Take one last look out over the Nadab Floodplains, woodlands and dark ribbons of rainforest before moving to your private campsite at Jabiru. Upon arrival at the campsite, enjoy some free time relaxing by the pool with a cold beverage until dinner is ready.
Enjoy a sleep in and leisurely breakfast before heading south to Gunlom Falls made famous by the iconic Aussie film Crocodile Dundee. Located on Waterfall Creek, Gunlom is a magical combination of seasonal waterfall and serene plunge pool, with picnic areas shaded by tall gums. From the top of Gunlom, you will be rewarded with one of Australia’s Top 100 Best Views – sweeping vistas of Kakadu’s stone country, woodland and riparian. At the top, take a relaxing and well-deserved dip in the crystal-clear pools.
After a tasty picnic lunch, travel toward the Katherine region. You will arrive at your private campsite in the early evening.
Rise with the sun to make the most of your day in Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge). Located just 30-kilometres (19mi) north-east of Katherine, Nitmiluk is famous for its 13 impressive gorges carved from the ancient sandstone country which stretch as far as the eye can see.
Embark on a glorious 2-hour dawn boat cruise (optional and own expense) or walk along the sheer rock walls that make the area so spectacular. Watch the gorge move through a spectrum of colours and glowing hues and keep an eye out for local wildlife including freshwater crocodiles, ospreys, red tailed black cockatoos, great bowerbirds, white-gaped honeyeaters and red-winged parrots.
A short drive later, arrive at Top Didj Cultural Experience and meet Indigenous artist Manuel Parrikal, who will share stories about living the traditional way as a young boy and Aboriginal contemporary life today. Next, Manuel will show you how to paint a Rarrk (crosshatching) painting using a reed brush (Jalk). You then get to try your hand at fire lighting and spear throwing with a woomera.
Lunch today is at Edith Falls (Leliyn), a series of cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear rock pools. Time permitting, you can hike to the top of the escarpment and take in the amazing views over the waterfalls or go for a dip in the plunge pool surrounded by lush paperbark and pandanus trees.
At the end of the day, head back to Darwin via a comfort and refreshment break at the Adelaide River. Return to Darwin accommodation approximately 6:30pm.

The Top End experiences distinct dry and wet seasons. Average daily maximum temperatures in the dry season (April to September) range from 29 degrees (Celsius) in July to 38 degrees in September with little rain and low humidity. Overnight, temperatures decrease to become considerably cool by early morning and sunrise. Average daily maximum temperature during the waterfall season (October to March) is 40 degrees with significant humidity. Most of the 500-700mm annual rainfall occurs between December and March resulting in unsealed roads becoming impassable and park closure.
