Cycling distance: approximately 45 km (Easy to Moderate Grade).
Today you will be transferred to the southern end of the Great Taste Trail Rail at Kohatu where your cycling adventure begins. From here, ride back to Stoke is mostly downhill. Highlights of the ride include the Spooners Tunnel, a disused rail tunnel 1.4 km long. Emerging from the tunnel, the landscape opens into a wide, lush valley which runs to all the way to Tasman Bay, with Nelson city is visible in the distance.
The two villages on this section of trail, Wakefield and Brightwater, are both charming and historic. The scenic countryside here is dotted with pretty rural buildings, hop gardens, and vineyards. This is also the densest area of wineries on the whole of the trail. The cafes along the route are well-located for snacks and lunch en route.
Tonight's accommodation is in a heritage B&B in Stoke, on the outskirts of Nelson.
Cycling distance: approximately 65 km (Moderate Grade)
This morning you will be transferred to Wakefield where the cycling begins. There is a bit of a climb today, up and over the Pigeon Valley Saddle (325m), with a gravel section of 14km. There are no shops or cafes between Wakefield and Riwaka. The road is marked with Great Taste Trail markers and has low traffic volumes.
Once over the saddle (the summit is 11 km from Wakefield) Pigeon Valley is lush and gently rolling and you will see the first old tobacco kiln on this road. The settlements in this valley are often just one house or perhaps a little school. Woodstock (32 km from Wakefield) is simply a junction. From Woodstock to Riwaka (33 km) is an on-road section which is very quiet and lovely - and gently downhill virtually all the way, following the Motueka River. Enjoy the occasional roadside fruit stall, the tobacco and hop kilns, lovely picnic spots (and one fabulous swimming spot) beside the river here.
The on-road section rejoins the Great Taste Trail Coastal Route at Riwaka and from here it is an easy 4 km to the western edge of Motueka. The town is bustling and colourful during the summer fruit-picking season so take time to relax here. The accommodation tonight is in a comfortable motel in the heart of the township.
Overnight in Motueka.
Cycling distance: approximately 43 km (Easy to Moderate).
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast.
Todays ride begins with an out and back from Motueka to Kaiteriteri return on the Great Taste Trail Coastal Route, before continuing on to Mapua. From Motueka to Kaiteriteri the ride is flat until the end - and this is "honesty box" cycling, so have some coins handy and pick up some fresh fruit (in season) including apples, pears, nashi, grapes, feijoas, citrus and melons at a trailside stall.
Leaving Motueka the trail heads to Riwaka, a cute little village which is home to a great cafe and a craft brewery. After Riwaka, there is a section that goes right through a kiwifruit orchard before the trail rejoins the coast.
The trail then climbs and drops beside the road for a section before ducking into the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park. This last section of 3.1 km is intermediate grade and takes the Easy Rider Trail through the bike park. The surface here is smooth and it is not technical, but you might want to take it very gently as there are some tight corners and some riders prefer to walk.
As the trail winds down through the bush and pine trees you will soon get your first glimpse of the stunning golden shores of Kaiteriteri Beach. There is a good café here, so this could be a great spot for morning tea, before returning to Motueka.
Leaving Motueka, the trail follows the coast around the edge of the town then continues to Lower Moutere. There is a great cafe here, on the site of Riverside Community - the oldest alternative community in NZ. From here, the trail rises to follow a rolling ridge, with spectacular views out to Tasman Bay and across to Nelson city. The descent into the village of Tasman is a beauty and there is another great cafe here, with a quirky garden.
The last section through to Mapua travels past apple orchards before another lovely descent down to the coast. Mapua village has lots to offer, including a great bakery and the old wharf where there are three excellent cafes, a brewery and a wine bar.
Cycling distance: approximately 48 km (Easy to Moderate).
Todays ride consists of two sections. The first is an on-road ride on quiet country roads, cycling the rolling hills to the village of Upper Moutere in an area the locals call the Tuscany of NZ. This is an out and back from Mapua. The second section is the ride from Mapua back to Stoke on the Great Taste Trail Coastal Route, which is flat and easy.
From Mapua to Upper Moutere, the landscape is rolling with one longer, steady climb of approximately 2 km. The route includes one section of 2 km on a secondary road with no shoulder and is not recommended for the kids. After the climb from the coast up to the summit of the rolling Moutere foothills (elevation approx 100 m) the route is a lovely meander on country roads past vineyards and apple orchards to Upper Moutere.
Look out for plantings of grapes, olives, black currants and hops and the old hop kilns, colonial farmhouses and interesting farm buildings. You won't want to miss the highly acclaimed Neudorf Vineyards, where you are welcome to take a picnic and relax on the lawn with a glass of their gorgeous chardonnay. Wines from Neudorf Vineyards have found their way onto the wine lists of several great European restaurants.
In the village of Upper Moutere, visit the fabulous pottery of Katie Gold and Owen Bartlett, call at a pantry store and design studio and relax over a local craft beer at The Moutere Inn, the oldest pub in NZ. Your ride back to Mapua includes a fabulous long downhill as you ride back down to the coast.
The final section of your ride today starts with the ferry trip, which departs from the Mapua Wharf and takes about 5 minutes. Landing on Rabbit Island, the first 7 km section of the Coastal Trail follows the beachfront at Rabbit Island, through pine forest. This area is a popular picnic and swimming spot.
Leaving the beach, the trail meanders around an estuary edge and crosses some farmland before entering the urban area of Richmond. There is an industrial strip here before you meet the Rail Route to continue into Stoke - mission accomplished.
You will be pick up and transferred back to Nelson.
